Building the Refugium - Now that the tank was ready, we started to convert the 29g into a refugium using plexiglass bought from Home Depot.

The first step in building this 29g refugium is to cut the plexiglass to make the refugium walls. A simple two wall refugium design was used.. This is what we came up with:

Scoring the plexiglass using the 29g tank as a straight edge:

Grinding down the edges to make them as smooth as possible:

Two 1/4" plexiglass walls ready for sealing..

After putting the two plexiglass pieces into the tank to make sure it fits, we noticed the bottom had too much of a gap so we shaved off some of the corner to make for a better fit.

We used two (2) Dap 2.8oz Aquarium Seal silicone tubes to seal both sides of the plexiglass.. The 29 gallon refugium *just* barely fits into the cabinet with about .25" space between the glass and tank stand cabinet walls.

DIY Refugium

Time to place the tank onto the stand & run the hoses to the refugium

Now to mix some salt and add the rocks.

Refugium with live rock and chaetomorpha macro algae

This is the refugium as of Oct 28, 2008. I've added a skimmer, about 15-20lbs of live rock and chaetomorpha macro algae.

Here's a closeup of the chaetomorpha donated by my buddy dboyz.

And finally a shot of the refugium and tank:

How did you fit the 29g under the 72g?

I received this message from a forum user that others might be curious about:

"i want to set up a sump like urs. But hoow did u get the 29 gallon tank under the 72 gallon bow front..."

My reply:

"Hi -- I had to put the 29g in first before putting the 72g on the stand. The 29g JUST fit without any room to spare. So I hope you havent put your 72g on the stand yet as the only way to get the 29g is to put it through the top of the stand"
